I’ll be the first to admit I was so wrong… You see, I had always thought I was a fan of western food. Even from a young age, I was always looking out for opportunities to enjoy a burger or sandwich. So when I found out that I had to travel to America, I was all smiles. Thinking of all the burgers waiting for me there.. food was definitely NOT going to be a problem!

Thus I was shocked, to say the least, when after wolfing down my “burger” at the famous fast food restaurant, I found I was not satisfied at all. Something seemed to be missing. How could it be? I left the restaurant unsatisfied and made my way back to the hotel. Enticing aromas wafted towards me. I hurried towards the smell and saw a Chinese restaurant full of diners enjoying dim sum.

I sat down quickly and a waiter appeared next to me. Taking a quick look at the menu, I gave him my order and waited. Now Dim Sum means “touch the heart”. It is a loud and happy dining experience shared by families as they “yum cha” and catch up on the latest happenings.

Biting into the tender and juicy “siew mai”, I was instantly transported back to my childhood days. Sweet memories of sitting around the table with my family and trading secrets with my siblings brought tears to my eyes.

Chinese cuisine is an art form of taste, beauty and variety. Yes, Chinese cuisine is my heritage, my cup of tea…why didn’t I realise that earlier?

My first encounter with full course Chinese food was years ago during my University Student Hostel Annual Dinner. At first I am a bit hesitate to try it but after assured by friends and the Banquet Manager that it’s HALAL, I gave it a try. The hot and cold appetizer was served and later follows by Sichuan soup simply fabulous. It really opens my taste buds to a new world. The steam fish, roasted chicken, fried rice and dissert absolutely fantastic. It really confirms that Chinese cuisine is among the delicious food on the planet. From there on I always look forward for a wholesome and tantalizing Chinese food experience.

The only Chinese cuisine that appeals to me and my family palate is Szechuan cuisine. Perhaps because as Malay, we favor hot and spicy food and Szechuan cuisine have won us over. The center of attraction is obviously the unique Sichuan peppercorn that gives that spicy kick and tantalizing experience. It goes well with everything. As hot and spicy it can be, Szechuan cuisine always lures me and my family back for more over and over again.

My all time favorites definitely Dim Sum. Literally meaning "touch the heart" it really won my heart. It come in bite size and looks so cute. Each Dim Sum individually prepared with detail and unique shape. The filling variety so enormous and to name some such as seafood, vegetarian and selection of meat prepared as spicy or sweet, steam or fry. It simply has so many methods to do it. And Dim Sum best to have in communal fashion with family and friends along with good Chinese tea. And I know at Hilton Hotel is among the best place to savor it.

Why I love Chinese food?
Besides the blend of ingenuity and choices to boot,
They are uniquely delicious to satisfy everyone’s mood.
From fried tofu to lok-lok from vendors,
To hotel spread like Toh Yuen's that is a delight to savour,
My favourites are Char-Siew bun and crispy cruellers!

WHAT MADE ME A CHINESE FOOD FAN? THAT'S SIMPLY THE VARIETY OF TASTE & CHOICE.
WHEN DID I FIRST TAKE A LIKING? HAHA, SIMPLY I AM CHINESE AND I GREW UP EATING THIS WORLD'S FINEST CUISINE...
WHAT I LIKE? SIMPLY THE "HAR GAU SIU MAI" IS MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE!
FOR MYSELF, I ALSO ENJOYED COOKING CANTONESE STYLE FOR MY FAMILY, WITH THE SATISFACTION TO STAY TOGETHER.
CHINESE CUISINE SIMPLY EXTRAORDINARY...

Prejudice aside, my liking for Chinese food is in its creativity of dishes, in perception as well as sensation! I love the vegetarian cuisine, especially the soy-based concoctions where looks and tastes can truly deceive and delight! My favourite dishes are the “fish slice” and “fried prawn” lookalikes which are a mixture of soy and seaweed, and soy and cauliflower respectively.

Chinese delicacies are simply full of flavor and texture that’s simply “Hou Sek”. Distinctive spices and herbs blended together to give the perfect aroma to any dish would simply make me dine anytime and any day. Magnificent masterpieces ranging from the sweet and sour Peking duck to the mouth watering sharks fin soup are made with perfection. I’m a loyal lover of Chinese food because it’s such an honor to savor the spectacular art of Chinese cooking.

Each nibble and bite of a dignified dish can bring family and neighbors closer and is able to bond hearts in the love of a common fantasy, Chinese cooking. No matter where ever you are or whatever you may be doing, Chinese delicacies would always remind you of the good things in life that you shouldn’t miss.

On our first date, Prasad picked me up at work for lunch, which I insisted must be quick. Enthralled by his good looks and conversation and charm, I did not notice until he had parked at a nearby Chinese restaurant. My only experience with Chinese food at that time had been 'stir fried mee hoon'' which did not taste very nice. I decided I hated Chinese food.
I thought "I'll just not eat". Prasad then ordered some 'Char Siu Bao, Spring Rolls, Shu Mai Dumplings and a few other dishes. Well, I took a nibble of this and a taste of that and suddenly I was hooked. I ate at least half of everything. Some of our most memorable dates after that were at Chinese resturants. Prasad and I are now married and our son loves Chinese food too. I cook Chinese dishes and my favorite restaurants are still Chinese."
